Lost all music?

Squeezebox has most connection to my external drive with all my music. For the last week it has failed to add any new music I added, I have tried over and over to get it to do a directory scan (either to find new music or clear and find everything again) but it never starts the scan, just says directory scan and then never starts counting the time it takes to scan.

I cleared the cache, restarted. unplugged the SB classic, and now I have none of my music. The files are certainly still on the drive and in my itunes, but none show up on SB.

Odd. Frustrating. Help???
