I bought a Logitech Duet back in 2008 when it first came out. I was debating whether to get the Sonos or not, but I decided on the Duet because:
So I went with the SB. For me:
So that was 7 years ago and technology has changed. The Slimdevice line is at its end. My understanding is that once mysqueezebox is discontinued, my SB will turn into a device that simply streams my mp3 collection to my stereo and phones. There's a whole slew of technologies that allow me to stream music to my phones. I'm using Airstream to stream to my phones (we just moved I haven't unpacked my SB yet) and am very happy with it. In fact, hooking up a dedicated phone to my stereo could have been an option way back when had Android and this app been around.
I feel that maybe now is the time to decide whether to stick with SB/LMS or invest in some newer technology. One thing that's driving this is that I now have a new baby and would like to get a mini stereo for her to listen to music. The SB Boom seems perfect for this, but I feel a little funny buying something that was discontinued in 2011, doubly so since Amazon is listing it at $530! So now I'm evaluating my next step.
I'd really appreciate any recommendations. I'm a little bit at a loss about what to do now. Thanks!!!
- Sonos was much more expensive.
- Logitech seemed more "hackable", although I never took advantage of that.
- I remember reading the SB has better sound quality, although I never researched why.
- SB seemed more Linux friendly, although I can't remember why.
So I went with the SB. For me:
- The main goal is to get access to the MP3 collection on my server on my stereo system and any room in the house. Having international radio stations and access to services like Pandora is cool, and once in a blue moon I'll listen to Salsa stations in South America, but access to my music collection from anywhere in the house and my stereo system is my main focus.
- Setting up the Duet was sometimes a nightmare. I heard Sonos is easier and I envied that. But once I got the SB set up, it was flawless and I was very happy with it.
