Pardon me if this has been discussed before, a search did not dig up exactly what I am looking for.
As a longtime Squeezebox fan who took a longish break from music stuff to tend to some life events, I find I am behind the curve with the latest developments. I was not even aware of the changes such as no more SB, etc, until I started looking for a solution to this challenge.
A brief summary then:
- Been running LMS (of course, I called it SBS before today) on an old (large) desktop PC running Win XP. This is just about all this old horse is being used for any more. The music is stored on a hard drive separate from the PC.
- Owing to having moved to a smaller place (part of that whole life events thing), I find I do not have a good logical place to keep the PC AND use it efficiently. Besides, I hate running it day and night, and as you know, booting up XP is a pain, so music listening is anything but spontaneous.
- So what I'd like to do, in the least expensive way possible (this is kinda important but at the same time I can't spend ten hours to save 25 bucks), is have a SMALL footprint device that I can (ideally) leave on 24/7 and connect it to my hard drive.
- So I started searching, reading, etc. But now it's question time...
- I already own a 7" Kindle Fire HD. This would be my very first choice of HW, as it is largely in disuse, having been superseded by a larger Fire for tablet use. As you know, powering it up is quick, so I regard this as a 'close-to 24/7' solution
-Second choice, Chromebook. Some Acers going at decent prices.
-Others, but I am now straying from (semi) comfort zones here: ReadyNAS, Pi, etc. From what I have read the former is not an ideal server.
My level of tech savvy, while ok, does not extend to geek levels. As an example, I successfully sideloaded Dolphin to my new Fire, but it took a couple of tries.
Is it possible to load and run LMS on a Fire? That is the primary question....
