Unable to play mp4 files after upgrading media server and reinstalling LMS

I am unable to play m4a files after upgrading my Ubuntu media server and re-installing LMS.

I have been running LMS on my media server running Ubuntu 12.04 server quite happily for a couple of years. I have a mixture of mp3 and mostly mp4 files ripped through iTunes (I think I ripped earlier files as mp3 and then changed the setting some time ago to iTunes Plus using AAC encoder and it’s been that ever since).

I recently upgraded my server’s mobo and CPU (to Asus M5A 78L-M and MAD FX 4300) so did a clean install of everything including LMS. I thought it had all gone OK but discovered if I play any of the m4a files I get the message: “Problem: can’t open file for: <track name>”. Mp3 files are fine and the albums and artwork for both mp3 and m4a files look normal – they just won’t play.

I’m running LMS 7.7.3. I’ve checked the settings under Advanced > File Types and Apple Lossless was set to ‘disabled’ but have changed to ‘native’ which made no difference (under Apple Lossless, FLAC is set to faad/sox, MP3 disabled and PCM faad). I have no idea what other settings I can check or change.

I checked the scan log files and notice an error warning about being unable to read at least 16 bytes from file, which I’ve copied below. All the files are stored on the media server under a standard iTunes structure (i.e. /Media/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music) with full read/write permission for all users. I can play any of the files (mp3 or m4a) with Media Player in Windows with no problem.

I’m at a loss what the problem is and would really appreciate any suggestions to solve it.

Many thanks.
