I'm running Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.3 - 1375965195 @ Mon Aug 19 11:42:55 PDT 2013 on a Synology DS211 NAS. I have a Squeezebox Radio and Squeezebox Duet.
I have been running this configuration of Logitech Media Server and some Squeezeboxes for several years now, however in the last 3 - 6 months I have been plagued with connectivity/performance issues. The squeezebox radio gets the most use, so some of the examples will be clearly related to that device:
- When I go to bed, I pick the "Rain Outside" Nature Sound to create some noise. (Otherwise freight train traffic noise will wake me up.)
- During the night the "Rain Outside" sounds will often randomly stop.
- In the morning, instead of the alarm clock waking me to my selected "Favorite", I get the dreaded "Jazz" noise.
- When I press a memory key to get an Internet Radio station, instead I get a message that the Squeezebox Radio is trying to connect to the Logitech Media Server library.
- After some time, it will fail to connect to the library and the error messages appears asking me if I want to "try again", etc. The "wireless" symbol in the bottom right corner will have changed to the red colour.
- If I select "Try again" it will fail to connect.
- If I power off and on the radio, it will work properly for a period of time. For example it will play my Internet radio station allow me to browse and play My Music, etc., however after some time, usually 30 minutes to a couple of hours but not predictable or repeatable, it will go quiet again. It may or may not appear to be trying to connect to the library.
- Other manifestations of the problem include when picking "My Music" to browse the library will result in the "swirling circle" thinking symbol, but no list of Artists or Albums, etc comes up. I can hit the back button to get the the menu to try again, and rarely this will work. Sometimes this issue will result in the message that it's trying to connect to the Library.
- Once these issues become apparent on the Squeezeboxes, connecting to the Logitech Media Server with a web browser on port 9002 results in a very slow response. Connecting to the Settings page and picking the "Information" tab is especially painful. (Gigabit network, fast PCs, never previously an issue.)
To assist with diagnosing this problem I have done the following but it was not resolved the issue:
- Plugged my Squeezeboxes into and configured for wired LAN to ensure that wireless signal strength isn't the issue.
- Reset my Squeezeboxes to Factory, and uninstalled/reinstalled the Logitech Media Server on the Synology NAS. I verified that the package folder was indeed removed from the NAS before reinstalling the package.
- Removed unnecessary plugins in an attempt to isolate the issue.
- I read that removing the "UPnP/DLNA Media Interface" plugin might fix this issue, but apparently not.
- Jumbo frames are not enabled on the NAS.
These are the common visible errors in the log follow, however I think I've seen these errors from time to time for years:
While my Synology NAS configuration does change from time to time, I cannot correlate anything that would result in this issue. Usually CPU is 5 - 7% and RAM is at 61% utilization. The pearl process is using 62.2MB most of the time.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
