Project: Better alternative for Logitech Media Server on SheevaPlug/any plug PC?

All,

** Is there a (cheaper) alternative for the SheevaPlug to run LMS and which can play my personal music stored on a USB/SD Card? **

We know the disadvantages of built-in media server in the SB/Touch:
- Is a very basic version of the real Logitech Media Server (with less features and less stable)
- It works very badly with music stored on an USB/SD card plugged into the SB/Touch. It's all very unstable.

To do it right -to play your own music collection- you need to run the LMS on a separate PC or alternatively: on SheevaPlug/any plug type PC.
However: this requires usually a PC running all the time (or use the Wake-on-LAN functionality) or spend approx 100 USD on the ShevaPlug + an extra HD with all your music.

THE PROJECT (I plan to do) and advise I like to ask (perhaps some people already did something similar):

Starting Points:
- I want to run the LMS (not the in-built server of the SB/Touch)
- I do not want to run the LMS on a NAS
- I do not want to have a normal PC running for it (even not with WOL)
- I have all my music (ripped) on a USB or SD Card - about 15 GB. I do not want to us a HD for this or a HD+(normal)PC for running LMS.
- I could use a SheevaPlug/any plug type PC: but is there a cheaper alternative?
- I have a router (Sitecom WL-309) with an in-built USB port - which I could use to connect my USB with all my music to it.
- Browser access to the LMS configuration pages via any PC connected to the same local network.

THE BIG Question:
- Is there a (cheaper) alternative for the SheevaPlug to run LMS and which can play my personal music stored on a USB/SD Card?
- Can this device run the LMS package & also access my music on an USB which is plugged into my router? Then the device running LMS doesn't require an USB port.
- Can this device go on standby / use WOL capabilities to minimise power consumption but is always standby?

Any people who work on such project before?
